Know the Root: Everything About the Kava Plant and Its Varieties
What is Kava
Kava is the root of a plant called Piper methysticum, native to the South Pacific. For centuries, it has been used in ceremonies, rituals, and social gatherings by cultures from Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga, Samoa, and other islands. Its main appeal is its effect: it calms the body and quiets the mind without altering consciousness.
How It’s Cultivated
Kava grows in volcanic soils, in humid climates with partial shade. It is a plant that requires time and care. Noble varieties take between 3 and 5 years to mature. The more its growth time is respected, the better the quality of its active compounds, called kavalactones.
At MĀKANA, we work only with producers who understand this: you can’t rush what is sacred.
Varieties and Effect Profiles
Not all kava is the same. There are over 100 noble kava varieties, each with a different profile. They are mainly classified according to their effect:
- Heady: promotes mental clarity and gentle energy.
- Heavy: intensely relaxes the body, ideal for nighttime.
- Balanced: offers a balance between body and mind.
Choosing one or another depends on the time of day, purpose, and sensitivity of the consumer. At MĀKANA, we offer rotating blends according to the season and desired experience.
Noble vs. Non-Noble Kava
This is a key distinction. Noble kava is safe, has predictable effects, and has been used for generations. Non-noble kava (sometimes used to cut costs) can have undesirable effects, including stomach discomfort or excessive drowsiness. In many countries, its use is restricted.
MĀKANA only uses noble kava, selected at origin with full traceability.
Origin and Traceability
Our kava comes from family cooperatives in Fiji and Vanuatu. We don’t work with mass distributors or generic suppliers. We know the names, lands, and practices of those who cultivate it. This allows us to ensure what we serve is pure, ethical, and sustainable.
Sustainable Practices
We are committed to fair and regenerative trade. We pay prices that support producing communities, promote cultivation that respects the soil, and avoid overexploitation. Our commitment is clear: every bowl of kava we serve carries a story of respect and reciprocity.
Why It Matters to Know This
Many places sell kava as an “exotic drink” without context. At MĀKANA, we believe knowing the origin transforms the experience. When you drink kava, you’re not just ingesting a substance: you’re participating in an ancestral tradition. Knowing what you drink, how it was grown, and by whom, generates respect.
Kava Is Not a Trend. It’s Living Culture.
In times of hyperproductivity, kava invites pause. In a world of overstimulation, it offers active calm. And in a culture revolving around alcohol, it offers a real alternative.
At MĀKANA, we honor it from the root to your bowl. If you want to learn more, we’re waiting for you to try it and hear its story firsthand.
